There doesn't seem to be a file called in the \windows\inf directory - there is a file called but this is over 40Mb of plain text and so it's too big to post here? Anyway, here's the DxDiag log file content. So, I assume that something in SP2 is preventing the installation process (it was fine before that). I've found that since SP2, all versions of the AC97 realtek driver installation packages behave in this way except for 6. This pattern is repeated without end, some kind of infinite loop. I've tried installing the latest AC97 driver from Realtek (6.) - it starts to install and gets as far as the warning dialogue about installing software from an unrecognised publisher, I click "Install anyway" - it churns away for a few minutes and then represents the warning dialogue about the unreconised software publisher and I press the "Install anyway" button again.
